Making an appointment at a dental clinic for the first time, or returning after a long time, can cause doubts and sometimes nerves. This is completely normal. Knowing what to expect beforehand helps you arrive feeling more at ease.
At MIDSA, our dental clinic in Valencia, the first visit is free and is designed for this purpose: to get to know each other, listen to you and assess your case without rushing.
What is the purpose of the first visit?
This is an assessment consultation, not a treatment. The goal is to understand your oral health, what concerns you, and what you'd like to improve. From there, we'll explain the options available to you.
What the first visit is like step by step
1. A conversation to get to know you. We start by talking to you: why you're here, if you have any discomfort, what you expect from the visit, and if there's anything you're worried about. We also ask about your medical history and any medications you're taking, as these can affect any dental treatment.
2. Examination of the mouth. We examine teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues. We look for cavities, signs of gum disease, wear, missing teeth, or any other abnormalities.
3. X-ray, iTero 3D scanner and photos. During all initial visits, we perform three tests that allow us to make a complete diagnosis from day one:
- Radiography: It allows us to see what is not visible to the naked eye, such as the condition of the roots, the bone, or cavities between the teeth.
- iTero 3D Scanning: An intraoral scanner creates a 3D digital model of your mouth, without pastes or uncomfortable molds. It allows us to assess your bite and the position of your teeth and, if needed, to plan treatments such as invisible orthodontics.
- Photos: They document the initial state of your smile and help us explain your case and compare its evolution over time.
4. We'll explain what we've seen. With the images and the 3D model in front of you, we dedicate time to helping you understand your situation in clear language: what is fine, what should be monitored, and what needs treatment.
5. Treatment plan and budget. If you need any treatment, we'll explain the options, the steps, the approximate duration, and the cost, and we'll answer any questions you may have. The decision is yours, and there's no pressure.
Does the first visit hurt?
No. Neither the examination, nor the X-ray, nor the scan, nor the photos are painful. If you're afraid of the dentist, tell the team from the start: we'll adapt the pace of the visit and let you know before each step.
How to prepare for your first visit
- Bring your medical history if you have it: previous x-rays or reports from other dentists.
- Write down your questions. It's easy to forget them during a consultation.
- Make a list of your medications and mention any allergies.
- Let us know if you are pregnant, to take into account before taking the x-ray.
- Tell us about your problems: pain, sensitivity, bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth, or difficulty chewing.
- Brush your teeth before you come, like any other day.
How often should I go to the dentist?
A checkup once a year is typical, although in some cases more frequent visits are advisable, for example, if you have gum problems, wear braces, or have implants. During your first visit, we'll advise you on the recommended frequency of checkups.
