Nocturnal enuresis (urinating while asleep) is common in children and, in some cases, even affects adolescents.
Why does nocturnal enuresis occur?
One of the reasons is that children breathe through their mouths.
When we are born, the anal sphincters and bladder reflexes are not yet installed and automated in the cerebellum.
This will take place around the age of two, but it only occurs during this period in children who breathe through their noses, since children who breathe through their mouths have an oxygen deficit in their lungs and especially in their brains (hypoxia), which affects the formation of reflexes. This will also happen with other reflexes, which will not develop.
Oxygen deficiency will be directly reflected in other structures such as the Reticular Formation, which is responsible, among other things, for muscle tone, sleep, and the relationship between the brain and the cerebellum.
To end these problems as soon as possible, it is necessary to regulate the nasal breathing of these patients.
At Midsa Dentistry, we offer treatment to help you develop the habit of nasal breathing. Schedule an appointment for more information.
