Today, April 11th, is World Parkinson's Day, so today we are going to give some key information and advice for those who suffer from this disease.<\/h3>\n

Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative disorder of the nervous system characterized by lack of coordination, muscle rigidity, and tremors. It most commonly affects older adults. Patients with Parkinson's disease face increased risks related to their oral health.<\/h3>\n

As a result of the medication these patients must take, there is a decrease in saliva production and, consequently, a reduction in its antibacterial properties and digestive enzymes, in addition to causing dryness and difficulty swallowing. One of the causes of reduced saliva production is an increased risk of cavities and periodontal disease.<\/h3>\n

Muscle weakness is another symptom of this disease that can cause difficulty swallowing and chewing, and in some cases, drooling. It is recommended to see a speech therapist who can help with exercises to strengthen the muscles in the affected area and thus reduce the symptoms.<\/h3>\n

If the patient uses dentures, the muscle weakness associated with this disease can cause ulcers, irritation of the gums and palate; it is important that the dentures are well designed and fit the patient perfectly.<\/h3>\n
